Archaea constitute the third domain of life and are evolutionarily distinct from bacteria and eukaryotes. Studies have shown that archaea are diverse and can be found in different environments ranging from extreme to more moderate ones, where they play key roles in biogeochemical cycles.
Surprisingly enough, viruses can also infect archaea. These viruses represent one of the most diverse and least understood groups of viruses in the global virosphere. They exhibit unique morphologies and an impressive genetic repertoire not seen among viruses infecting bacteria or eukaryotes.
This video gives a short overview of arhaea and their viruses.
